Deeper Blacks

Kevin Mullins is on my list of favorite photographers because his images are damn good and he seems like a very cool, honest dude. I love the way he uses shadows to create emotion in his images. By exposing for the highlights in contrasty scenes, his blacks are really, really deep. This helps bring focus to the subject he’s photographing and gets rid of distractions.

As you can see, I’ve crushed the shadows in this image of my black labrador sunbathing in the warm window light. I really dig it.
